One Key+ Card review

The One Key+ Card issued by Wells Fargo is one of two new credit cards designed for regular or frequent travelers who prefer to book travel through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, instead of focusing on a particular airline or hotel brand. The One Key+ Card earns 3% in OneKeyCash on Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, 3% in OneKeyCash at gas stations, grocery stores, and on dining and 2% in OneKeyCash on other purchases.

While the standard Wells Fargo One Key™ Card*The information for the Wells Fargo One Key™ Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. has no annual fee, the One Key+ Card has a $99 annual fee, which is competitive with other travel rewards cards in this class. New applicants can earn $600 in OneKeyCash after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

Benefits include automatic Gold Tier status with the One Key program, which offers a 20% savings at hotels and double OneKeyCash at VIP Access properties booked through Expedia and Hotels.com. You also receive priority support, upgrades at VIP Access properties and an extra perk, such as a free beverage or food item plus price drop protection on eligible flights booked through the Expedia app. You can elevate your status to Platinum when you use your card to spend $30,000 or more per calendar year.

The One Key+ Card also comes with strong travel benefits including cellphone protection, a trip cancellation and interruption policy and auto rental collision damage waiver with primary coverage. It also features an up to $100 statement credit towards the application fees for either the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry program and $100 in OneKeyCash each cardholder anniversary. These benefits alone can be worth more than the annual cost of the card.

Pros

  • Strong new account bonus. New applicants can earn a large amount of OneKeyCash that they can spend on new travel reservations. This is a competitive offer for a travel card in this category.
  • Automatic Gold Tier status. It’s normally required that you book a minimum of 15 trip elements annually through Expedia, Hotels.com and/or Vrbo to attain this status, which unlocks discounts and additional rewards.
  • Numerous cardholder benefits. This card features several valuable benefits including cellphone protection, a trip cancellation and interruption policy and auto rental collision damage waiver with primary coverage, plus an up to $100 statement credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee.

Cons

  • No promotional financing offer. Many competing cards offer 0% APR financing, but this card doesn’t have such an offer.
  • Vrbo rewards are only valid on U.S. rentals. If you’re looking to redeem your rewards for international rentals, that’s not an option. You can, however, earn rewards on your Vrbo rentals abroad.
  • Rewards can only be used for Expedia Group redemptions. If you’re looking to use them for travel booked another way, it’s not an option.

One Key+ Card rewards

With this card, you can earn 3% in OneKeyCash on Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, 3% in OneKeyCash at gas stations, grocery stores, and on dining and 2% in OneKeyCash on other purchases. Your rewards increase when you have elite status with the OneKey program and stay at a VIP Access property offered by Expedia or Hotels.com. When booking travel through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, you earn two times the rewards with Gold status, which you can receive by spending $15,000 on the card during the calendar year. Earn Platinum status by booking 30 trip elements and you’ll receive three times the OneKeyCash, worth 9% of the amount paid on stays with Expedia and Hotels.com bookings and 5% on Vrbo. If you can earn 9% back on your travel, that’s an extremely competitive rate of return.

The card also offers new applicants $600 in OneKeyCash after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. This is also a best-in-class offer for a card in this category.

Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has around $29,525 in annual expenses that can be charged to a credit card. Here’s how our sample household’s rewards could break down:

Using this scenario, the cardholder would earn $785 in OneKeyCash that could be redeemed for travel reservations with Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo. For example, a couple from Los Angeles could redeem these rewards for a three-day weekend in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in February 2024, including flights and a hotel by the beach.

One Key+ Card perks

The One Key+ Card comes with several valuable cardholder benefits including cellphone protection, trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage and an auto rental collision damage waiver with primary coverage. You also receive Gold elite status with the One Key rewards program, which offers hotel discounts, increased rewards and benefits when staying at featured hotels. Another valuable benefit is the up to $100 statement credit towards the application fee for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

How the One Key+ Card compares to other travel cards

One Key+ Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a popular travel rewards card with a $95 annual fee that offers points in Chase’s Ultimate Rewards® program. These points are worth 1.25 cents each towards travel booked through Chase Travel℠, or can be transferred to travel partners such as United, Southwest and Hyatt.

Cardholders earn 5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. A good reason to get the Sapphire Preferred over the One Key+ Card would be if you value point transfers. The One Key+ Card would be better for those who aren’t interested in the complexities of points transfers, and those who enjoy booking travel through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

Editor’s take

Pros

  • Flexible points that can be transferred to 14 travel partners or redeemed through Chase Travel℠ at 1.25 cents each.
  • $50 annual statement credit toward Chase Travel hotel bookings.
  • Valuable travel protections.

Cons

  • $95 annual fee.
  • Category bonuses are limited and not competitive against other travel cards.
  • Transfer partner list is limited compared to programs like Amex Membership® Rewards and Citi ThankYou®.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred may not have a premium fee but it comes packed with enough benefits to stand tall in a crowded field of travel cards. It earns rewards at generous rates on travel purchased through Chase and on dining, and offers the same lineup of transfer partners as the more expensive Chase Sapphire Reserve®, plus a robust selection of travel protections.

One Key+ Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card*The information for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card*The information for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. offers rewards that can be redeemed directly for travel, or transferred to partners. Venture Rewards cardholders earn 5 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 2 miles per $1 on other purchases, and miles are worth one cent each towards travel statement credits, allowing you to book your travel any way you want. You can also transfer miles to airline and hotel partners.

For those who like transferring rewards to travel partners, or having the option to book their travel any way they’d like, that flexibility combined with the base rewards rate makes the card a compelling option. When comparing these two cards, the One Key+ Card would only be the choice for those who prefer booking their travel through Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

The no-annual-fee One Key Card is very similar to the standard One Key+ Card. The One Key Card earns at the same bonus rate as the One Key+ card, except it offers a lower rate back on purchases that don’t qualify for a bonus. It also features automatic Silver Tier status with the opportunity to reach Gold when you spend $15,000 in a calendar year. The One Key card has a smaller new welcome offer than the One Key+ card of $400 in OneKeyCash after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening and lacks the up to $100 statement credit towards the application fees for either Global Entry® or TSA PreCheck.

Most people trying to choose between the two cards will find that the elevated benefits on the One Key+ card can make it worth the annual fee.

One Key+ Card is right for you if:

  • You regularly use Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo.
  • You want to earn OneKeyCash for your daily spending.
  • You don’t mind paying an annual fee to receive more rewards and benefits.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The One Key+ card offers Gold Tier status versus the One Key card’s Silver. It also offers a higher base rate back in OneKeyCash instead of the no-annual-fee One Key card’s. Finally, the One Key+ card offers an up to $100 statement credit towards a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee.

Wells Fargo doesn’t list a credit score that’s required for this card. But as with similar travel rewards cards, you will need good or excellent credit to expect to be approved for a new account.

OneKeyCash can be redeemed for its value as travel reservations with Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo. So a $500 OneKeyCash credit is worth $500 off of a travel reservation. If the reservation costs less than the amount of OneKeyCash redeemed, then there’s no charge.
